New SAFe® Business Owner Microcredential - finally a training programme for the SAFe® Business Owner role

  • Agile Organisation
  • SAFe

The Business Owner - as the person with business responsibility for Agile Release Trains, Valuestreams or an entire SAFe® portfolio - is one of the most influential SAFe® roles and has a significant impact on the success of SAFe® through the targeted fulfilment of their role.

However, apart from the general ‘Leading SAFe® training’, there has been no special training for this target group to date. The SAFe® microcredential has been available as an official SAI product for business owners for a few days now and is offered as a 4- or 8-hour workshop.

The workshop consists of the following chapters:

  • The Role of Business Owners (the roles of the Business Owner)
  • Engaging with Lean Portfolio Management (collaboration with Lean Portfolio Management)
  • Aligning Priorities & PI Planning (prioritising and tasks of the BO in PI planning)
  • Realising Business Outcomes (ensuring business success)
  • Sponsoring Relentless Improvement (supporting continuous improvement)
  • Leading by Example (leading by example)

All chapters consist of theoretical input, interactive exercises and time for the participants to exchange ideas with each other. The training should be conducted with a group of 3-8 people who are already business owners or are about to take on the new role. They can be from the same company context, but do not have to be.

Right at the beginning of chapter 1, the important questions of who the right business owner(s) for a (new) SAFe® transformation can be and why it is important to have them on board are clarified - a question that arises in almost all new SAFe® transformations and ART launches.

Chapter 2 looks at the role of the business owner in terms of connecting a SAF® portfolio and dealing with new big issues.

Chapter 3 examines the activities of the business owner before, during and after the central SAFe® event, the PI Planning (PIPE).

Chapter 4 covers the activities of the business owner in the so-called ‘PI Execution’, the time between the PI Planning and the next one.

Chapter 5 deals with the extremely important topic of continuous improvement and optimising the flow of value delivery.

Finally, Chapter 6 motivates business owners to exemplify a lean-agile mindset in the organisation.

The training covers all areas and activities in which a Business Owner should be actively involved in order to help the SAFe® transformation succeed, whereby the theory is limited to the absolutely necessary terms and SAFe® concepts, as Business Owners should also actively ‘take care of the business’, which takes up a large part of their working time.
